Jawan changed the size of Atlee's market
Atlee's biggest jump came with Jawan, his first Hindi feature and first collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan. The film recorded ₹643.87 crore India net, ₹761.98 crore India gross and ₹386.34 crore overseas, taking its worldwide gross to ₹1,148.32 crore. Bollywood Hungama classifies the film as an all-time blockbuster.
That result changed the scale attached to Atlee's name. Before Jawan, his biggest reported worldwide grosser was Bigil at more than ₹300 crore. Jawan therefore took his commercial ceiling from the ₹300 crore range to above ₹1,100 crore in a single film, while also proving that his mass-action format could work outside his earlier Tamil collaborations.
Raaka is the first Atlee directorial to follow that result, which is why the project is being judged against a much larger commercial base than his earlier films.
Raaka moves Atlee into a heavier VFX production
Raaka brings Atlee together with Allu Arjun for the first time and is being produced by Kalanithi Maran's Sun Pictures. Deepika Padukone has been officially announced in a major female role, while Sai Abhyankkar is composing the music. Current reporting describes the film as a large-scale sci-fi project involving extensive visual-effects work and collaboration with international studios.
That technical direction is central to the film's scale. Atlee's earlier successes were large commercial entertainers, but Raaka is being built around a more effects-heavy visual world. Reports about multiple Allu Arjun roles and different timelines remain unconfirmed by the makers, so they cannot yet be treated as established story details.
The promotional campaign has also deliberately sold ambition rather than plot. Sun Pictures used the phrase “global triumph” in a recent promotional asset, while a mysterious “37” poster triggered theories around a major update connected to Atlee's September 21 birthday. New visuals tied to the birthday promotion have kept the project at the centre of current film discussion.
The Avatar comparison needs context
Director Cibi Chakravarthi, who previously worked with Atlee, recently said footage shown to him contained visuals that he considered extraordinary and compared what he saw with James Cameron's Avatar. The comment spread quickly because Raaka's completed footage has largely remained away from the public.
The Raaka team, however, has distanced itself from treating Avatar as its own benchmark. Allu Arjun's manager Sarath Chandra Naidu said the core team had never compared the film with established genre-defining movies and said the content would speak for itself. That distinction matters because the Avatar reference came from Cibi Chakravarthi's personal reaction, not from Atlee, Allu Arjun or Sun Pictures as an official technical comparison.
No official production budget has been announced, so widely circulated ₹800 crore, ₹900 crore or ₹1,000 crore figures should not be treated as confirmed numbers. The verified scale currently comes from the Sun Pictures production, the Allu Arjun-Atlee pairing, Deepika Padukone's confirmed involvement, the effects-heavy production plan and the international-studio work reported around the film.
Raaka therefore represents a new stage in Atlee's career rather than simply a sixth attempt to repeat his earlier formula. He moves into it after five consecutive commercial successes, three major Vijay collaborations and an all-time blockbuster with Jawan. The film's theatrical release date has not yet been officially announced.
