Production house Sun Pictures has introduced actor Vidya Balan as the primary antagonist in the Rajinikanth starrer Jailer 2. The makers released a character glimpse revealing her in a new role named Kantha. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the action entertainer marks her return to the Tamil film industry after her brief appearance in the 2019 film Nerkonda Paarvai. The unexpected reveal has circulated across social media networks ahead of the movie release.
The promotional video introduces the high-stakes environment of the sequel, setting a dark and stylized tone. The promo starts with Vidya Balan descending a dark staircase. Dressed in a blue saree paired with a black blouse, her character enters a dimly lit room to confront an undisclosed character. She delivers a dialogue in fluent Tamil, stating that once someone enters her domain, they cannot leave without listening to her commands. The teaser ends as she stares ahead and blows out smoke from a cigarette.
Music director Anirudh Ravichander composed the background score for this introduction. The electronic beats mirror the dark humour and styling that director Nelson Dilipkumar uses in his films.
Reports indicate that Kantha is a villainess who will directly oppose Rajinikanth's character, Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Trade tracking portals state that her character is the eldest daughter of the chief antagonist, played by Mithun Chakraborty. This sets up a new conflict for Muthuvel Pandian, whose retirement was upended during the events of the 2023 blockbuster first installment.
The addition of the National Award winner follows a series of character announcements by the production house. The makers previously revealed glimpses of Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu as Dileep and SJ Suryah as Bodhi Kalpak.
