Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu broke ground for the Sudha & Venkat Jasti Campus of the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) at Amaravati on September 23, 2026. The ceremony took place at Abbarajupalem village in Thullur mandal of Guntur district. It marks the formal start of construction on a facility that LVPEI describes as its Centre of Excellence and Eye Health Resource Centre for Andhra Pradesh.
The campus will be built across about 12 acres of allotted land near the E-03 Road and Seed Access Road N-14 junction. The planned built-up area is 800,000 sq ft, spread over a 10-year development period. LVPEI has stated that the first phase will establish a tertiary eye care centre, with patient services scheduled to open by September 2027.
The groundbreaking was attended by Dr Gullapalli N Rao, Founder Chair of LVPEI, and Dr Prashant Garg, Executive Chair, along with senior leadership from the institute. Several public representatives were present. They included Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Member of Parliament for Guntur and Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications.
Kandula Durgesh, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Cinematography and in-charge Minister for Guntur district, also attended. Other attendees were Y Satya Kumar Yadav, Minister for Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education, P Narayana, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, and Tenali Sravan Kumar, MLA for Tadikonda.
A Phased Build-Out for Eye Care in Andhra Pradesh
The Amaravati campus is planned in three phases. After the tertiary eye care centre opens in phase one, the second phase will add an Institute for Vision Rehabilitation, an Elderly Eye Care facility and a Child Sight Institute. The third phase will bring an Eye and Brain Institute, an Education Academy and a Community Eye Health division.
Dr Gullapalli N Rao said the aim is to create a centre that brings high standards of eye care closer to communities across the state while serving as a hub for education, research and innovation.
Dr Prashant Garg said the first phase would establish a tertiary eye care centre, giving patients access to advanced clinical services closer to where they live. Later phases, he said, would bring together vision rehabilitation, elderly and child eye care, eye and brain health, education, research and community eye health.
Part of a Wider Health Push in Amaravati
The LVPEI campus is one of several health-sector developments planned or underway in the capital region. The state government has positioned Amaravati as a future hub for advanced healthcare and life sciences, and the eye institute adds a specialised tertiary care layer to that plan.
LVPEI was established in 1987 and operates a five-tier Eye Health Pyramid. It provides more than 50% of its services at no cost to patients and is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Blindness.
The Sudha & Venkat Jasti Campus is expected to extend that model into the Amaravati region through clinical services, rehabilitation and community eye health programmes. Construction timelines beyond the first phase will depend on the institute's development schedule across the next decade.
