The Telugu Desam Party has stepped up preparations for the coming Andhra Pradesh local body elections, setting a target of defeating the YSR Congress Party across municipalities, corporations and other grassroots bodies.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and TDP national working president Nara Lokesh have separately asked party leaders and workers to treat the polls as a major political test and work closely with Jana Sena and the BJP.
TDP Looks to Carry 2024 Assembly Momentum Into Local Polls
The strategy is focused on carrying the momentum of the NDA alliance's 2024 Assembly victory into the local elections.
Naidu has asked party leaders to strengthen booth-level and grassroots organisation, convert support for the coalition government into votes and prevent differences among alliance partners from affecting the campaign.
Lokesh has also called for coordinated work among the TDP, Jana Sena and BJP, while setting a target of securing an unprecedented majority in the local polls.
Alliance Coordination at Centre of TDP Strategy
Managing the three-party alliance is a key part of the election preparations.
TDP, Jana Sena and BJP leaders have started constituency and district-level coordination meetings to assess their strengths, discuss reservation patterns and identify seats where each party has better prospects.
Final seat-sharing decisions have not yet been completed.
A nine-member coordination committee with representatives from all three NDA partners has already been formed in NTR district to work on preparations for urban and rural local-body elections.
Similar coordination efforts are intended to reduce disputes over seats and ensure workers of the three parties campaign together.
Ticket Competition Poses Challenge for NDA
Ticket competition remains a challenge for the ruling alliance.
The TDP has multiple aspirants in several areas, while Jana Sena and BJP leaders also have expectations over seat allocation.
The leadership is seeking careful candidate selection and seat distribution to reduce the risk of rebel candidates and prevent local disagreements from benefiting the YSRCP.
TDP Seeks Reversal of YSRCP's 2021 Local-Body Dominance
The elections will also test whether the political shift seen in the 2024 Assembly polls extends to local-level voting.
The YSRCP dominated Andhra Pradesh's previous major urban local-body elections in 2021, winning all 11 municipal corporations that went to the polls and 73 of 75 municipalities.
The political balance changed sharply in the 2024 Assembly election, when the TDP-led alliance came to power.
The coming local polls will therefore provide another measure of support for both the ruling NDA alliance and the opposition YSRCP at ward, municipality and grassroots levels.
Election Preparations Begin on Administrative Side
Administrative preparations have also begun.
The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission has started work related to polling stations for MPTC and ZPTC elections, while political parties are strengthening their organisations ahead of the polls.
A comprehensive election schedule has not yet been announced.
For now, the TDP's preparations are centred on candidate assessment, alliance coordination, ticket management and grassroots mobilisation.
The clean-sweep target remains an election objective. Its success will depend on how the NDA settles seat-sharing, manages competing aspirants and converts its Assembly-level strength into votes across individual wards, municipalities and other local bodies.
